South Point Hotel, Casino, and Spa, is one of the newer Las Vegas casinos having opened its doors on December 22, 2005. Michael Gaughan owns and operates the casino, which serves as the primary sponsor of Brendan Gaughan’s NASCAR car.
Gaughan spent $500 million building South Point, which was called South Coast back then. Builder broke ground in 2003, and the casino opened two years later boasting 662 rooms. Construction and expansions continued for the next few years, including a $95 million expansion that added more hotel rooms, more convention space, and five more food and beverage outlets. There are now 2,163 rooms and 80,000 square feet of gaming space.
Guests have plenty of entertainment options at South Point, including a 4,400 seat equestrian arena, a 400 seat showroom, and a 300 seat race and sportsbook. One thing you never see here - a smile from anyone on staff. It must be a miserable place to work. And honestly, the room has a decent enough set up, as far away as possible from the main floor, but still open and subject to rail-smokers. They often have the final table of tourneys right against the rail and several times I have had to hack and cough my way through the table. Lots of low dollar LIMIT games but they have an utterly goofy half-kill rule whereby the kill attaches after the same player wins ANY TWO POTS, regardless of the size of the pot. Usually, it must be a full rake pot to count against the kill, but not at SouthPoint, where they often make up their own rules by the way (see discussion below regarding the absence of an actual Poker Rules book on the premises). The cards are overplayed to the extent that they are crumpled, curled, and bent. That's inexcusable in my opinion. Any respectable poker room should always be playing with a clean deck. They also have one or two low dollar NLHE games and every now and then they can scramble up a FLO game. Overall a decent selection of games for such a low traffic room. Their real problem is pinheaded management who obviously don't give a @#$% about customers (read other comments for details). It's a shame too because this place has potential to be one of the top 2 or 3 locals rooms in town - but it will never happen with an anti-customer attitude like they have (although native New Yorkers might feel right at home here).
There are plenty of really bad players here, especially the tourists. Quite a few local sharks have picked up on this and tend to start showing up early in the evenings. At times, when their visitor traffic is low, you may end up as one of eight sharks at a table. But every now and then, you can find yourself the only non-tourist at a table full of drunk fish from Missoula.
Some good, some bad and some just horrible. It's hit or miss at this place. Several dealers I've had tend to spend way too much time watching the tv monitors instead of watching the action.
Slow service given the size of the room and proximity to the bar - it's often quicker to walk over to the bar yourself. I do (did) like the Pellegrinos! They could use a few more hotter babes to deliver cocktails, however.

One word describes management at SouthPoint: HORRIBLE. The place is run by a New Yorker with a New York attitude. Enough said? I've had issues with pretty girls getting bumped to the top of the waiting list (I am not a pretty girl BTW). But when it comes to their so-called tournaments, what a joke! The TD doesn't even know what the blind structures are! There is no list available - he just tells you that the computer screen will show the blinds as they change. Oh, really? Duh. That's great to know. And most recently - and what definitely is my LAST TRIP EVER to this poker hellhole, the on duty tournament director made a horrible floor decision against me when my opponent clearly mucked his hand, thereby killing it. The dealer caught the cards on the way to the muck, turned them over, and declared my opponent the winner, a decision that was upheld by the tournament manager after almost 10 minutes of discussion. And by the way, I actually demanded that the director show me the Rule in writing that he was referencing, and of course, no copy of the Rules available! They don't even have a copy of their own blind structure - why in the world would they have a copy of TDA rules?
Non-existent as far as I can tell. I played there 3 or 4 times before they even told me that my regular SP card did not work there! They have a special Poker card that you have to use in the poker room. Thanks for letting me know!
