How to Setup

The first player is chosen by rolling all 5 dice by each player. The player who gets the highest total from the dice rolled, is the first one to go. The game proceeds to the left. All players get their score card.

How to Play Yahtzee

All players get 3 chances to roll the dice at their turn so as to score the highest total from the dice combinations rolled. After the 3 rolls are made, players will mark their scores on the score card in the respective column. A player can always stop after the first roll they made if they find their score satisfactory.

1. First Roll – Players will roll all 5 of their dice. Players can stop their turn right here if they find their score satisfactory and note it down on their score card. Or they can set aside the dice that are ‘keepers’ and then roll again.

2. Second Roll – A player can roll any or all the dice from the first roll. It is not mandatory for a player to announce the combinations they are truing to roll as that might change after the second roll. Once the second roll is done, you can either stop or score by rolling once again.

3. Third Roll – If a player is not satisfied with their first and second roll and the combination that came, then they can always try to score more using the third roll opportunity that they have. They can roll some or all the five dice. Once this roll is done, you have to note down your score on the score pad. After this roll, your turn is over and the next player will begin their turn.

Scoring

The score card has 13 columns that are in correspondence to the 13 rounds in every game. At their turns, the players have to fill in a box even if their score is zero. The score card has 2 sections – Upper Section and a Lower Section.

The Upper Section involves –

· Aces (Ones): Total of Aces

· Twos: Total of Twos

· Threes: Total of Threes

· Fours: Total of Fours

· Fives: Total of Fives

· Sixes: Total of Sixes

If you are wondering How to Score Upper Section, then suppose a player rolls the combination – one 2, three 3’s, and one 4 then they can score that as a 9 in the threes box, a 2 in the twos box, and a 4 in the fours box for a total of 15 points. The aim of upper section is to score 63 points so as to earn 35 points bonuses using any combination.

Lower Section

· 3 of a Kind – Total of all 5 dice. If you roll 3 or more of same number dice then score in this section. Or you can score each number in an individual manner in the upper section or score the total in chance section.

· 4 of a Kind – Total of all 5 dice. You can score in this section only when you roll a 4 or more of the same number dice. Apart from that, one can also score the total three of a kind box or chance box. Players can also divide the numbers and score them individually in the Upper section.

· Full House – 25 Points. A player scores a full house when 3 of one number and 2 dice of another are rolled. Irrespective of the numbers composed, a full house is always equal to 25 points. One can also total the 5 dice and score three of a kind or chance box or score in Upper Section.

· Small Straight – This is equal to 30 Points. One can score small straights with any 4 sequential dice. For instance, if a player rolls 2, 3, 4, 5, and some other number. This is called a small straight. The sequence start and end do not matter for a small straight. It anyhow is equal to 30 points till it fits the small straight criteria. Players can score a small straight also by replacing small straight score in Chance Box or by distributing score in Upper Section.

Yahtzee

· Large Straight – This is equal to 40 Points. It can be scored with any 5 sequential dice. So, if a player rolls 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and some other number, it is considered a large straight. Here too, the number with which the sequence starts or ends does not matter. It will give the player 40 points. One can also score large straight in chance box, small straight box, or the upper section.

· Yahtzee – This gives 50 points. A player marks their score in Yahtzee box only if they roll five dice of the same number or 5 of a kind. For each additional Yahtzee, the player earns a bonus.

· Chance – Total of all 5 dice. This score is free for all the boxes that can be used when a player is not able to score in other categories and does not want to score a zero.

· Yahtzee Bonus – Once a player has rolled one Yahtzee, the next Yahtzee will earn the player a 100 bonus points. At such situations, the player will get a bonus chip and mark a check in the Yahtzee box. Then fill in one of the 13 boxes as per the Joker rules mentioned below. There are no limitations as to how many Yahtzee bonus points a player can earn. But if a player has a marked zero in Yahtzee box once, then they cannot earn Yahtzee onus.

Joker Rules

Here are the Joker rules you can use to fill in one of the 13 boxes –

For

Score the total of 5 rolled dice in Upper Section. In case they are filled, you can score in the lower section according to the point values mentioned above. For example, Large Straight is 40 points.

Here is an example for your understanding –

If a player rolls five 5’s, but they have already marked zero in their Yahtzee box. A player has also scored their 5’s in the Upper Section then Joker Rules allow that player to open any box in the Lower Section for scoring which is not already occupied. For instance, a player can mark 40 in the Large Straight Box if it is open.

Finishing the game

Once all the 13 columns have been filled by all the players then the game ends. All the players then sum up their total using the below way –

1. Upper Section – Enter the total sump of Upper section in the respective total score blank. If a player has scored 63 points or more, then they can add 35 bonus points before adding the final score.

2. Lower Section – Enter the total sum of the Lower section in its box. For each check in the Yahtzee mark, add 100 points to this score.

3. Grand Total – This is the total of Upper section and Lower section. Simply add the above two and this added score will decide who wins the game.

The player who has the highest score of them all wins Yahtzee.
